Democracy in America | Today in Zeega Retrospective

DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA | TODAY IN ZEEGA RETROSPECTIVE

On July 1st, we created the first Today in Zeega. It was an experiment to try and innovate a newscast for the internet age, replete with the latest in breaking news, historical remembrances, and of course, cat GIFs. Lots of cat GIFs. Our hundredth and final Today in Zeega was beamed out this Monday, but the beat goes on. Throughout the week, we’ll revisit our favorite stories from the last six months, and you can see all 100 at any time by going here. Today, we tackle Democracy in America.

The biggest story we covered in Today in Zeega by far—both in terms of scope and sheer length—was the US government shutdown. The shutdown began on October 1st just as one of the most controversial parts of Barack Obama’s Affordable Health Care Act, the marketplace exchange of Healthcare.gov, went live. 16 days later, the shutdown ended with billions of dollars lost and virtually nothing gained.  Along the way, we saw the worst our political system had to offer on all sides, as attested to by many of the Today in Zeegas you’ll see below.

It makes sense, then, to juxtapose the bummer vibes of one of the year’s more deplorable moments with the highest ideals to which our country aspires. So, after you get your fill of wallowing in the mire of where we are now, wash it down with a dram of what we’ve been before and can still be again, as epitomized by these Today in Zeegas on Election Day, Veteran’s Day, and the 50th Anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s I Have a Dream Speech. We’re especially stoked on the archival GIFs featured in the MLK and Veterans Day pieces.

I. The Government Shutdown

The Day Before The Madness Began - September 30th

The government heads for a shutdown; Breaking Bad, the greatest show ever, comes to an end; and RIP James Dean.

Day 1 - October 1st

The Government shuts down, Obamacare rolls on, and Vic Mensa drops a gem of a mixtape.

Day 2 - October 2nd

Congress gets a refresher in how laws work, the country feels the impact of the government shutdown, Banksy’s got a new show, and a happy anniversary for Snoopy and friends.

Day 7 - October 7th

The Senate chaplain is trying to keep politicians honest, Norway is going all-in on mundane broadcasting, and Edgar Allan Poe died under mysterious circumstances today in 1849.

Day 14 -  October 14th

Banksy continues to rock NYC, Congress continues its path to ignominy and global economic ruin, and Usher continues to shake his groove thang for his 35th turn on this earth.

Facing the Music - October 17th

The GOP faces the music as America gets back to work, Cory Booker wins big in New Jersey, and a good day for Albert Camus and Eminem (but Al Capone, not so much).

II. Anniversaries

The 50th Anniversary of MLK’s I Have a Dream Speech - August 28th

Rare archival GIFs from the March on Washington, plus the Syrian Electronic Army hacks the NY Times.

Election Day - November 5th

It’s Election Day in the United States, with all manner of vice-related measures on the docket. Also, Tilda Swinton turns 53, and Happy Guy Fawkes Day!

Last Night’s Winners - November 6th

Last night’s real election winners: Afros, weed, and evil corporations.

Veteran’s Day - November 11th

Rare archival GIFs from World War I and the first Armistice Day.

The Final Today in Zeega

Dearest Zeegaverse,

Today marks the 100th and final Today in Zeega.

On July 1st, we created the first Today in Zeega. It was as an experiment to try and innovate a newscast for the internet age, replete with the latest in breaking news, historical remembrances, and of course, cat GIFs. Lots of cat GIFs. In September, we teamed up with NowThis News, a force of nature in defining creative approaches to news in the social age.

When we set out, we said we’d make 100 in a row, capturing the news stories of the day and told in a language only the internet knows.

How else could one react to Miley’s VMA twerking?

Or the government shutdown?

Or cereal?

It’s been an incredible journey. Since launching, we’ve seen people around the world create Zeega-based newscasts of their own, from ABC News in Australia to The Royal Gazette in Bermuda to the Bennington College Free Press in Vermont. We can’t wait to see where it goes from here!

As for us, we’ll be devoting our next 100 days to a secret project. We’ll reveal more in January!

Thank you for joining us on this journey. This week, we’ll be remembering our favorite stories from Today in Zeega newscasts. These Today in Zeegas are an odd and illuminating glimpse into the past year, told in a form fit for an age where sloths and politicians are essential bedfellows.

And now, in all of its glory: #100.

Stay tuned ;)
