DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA | TODAY IN ZEEGA RETROSPECTIVE
On July 1st, we created the first Today in Zeega. It was an experiment to try and innovate a newscast for the internet age, replete with the latest in breaking news, historical remembrances, and of course, cat GIFs. Lots of cat GIFs. Our hundredth and final Today in Zeega was beamed out this Monday, but the beat goes on. Throughout the week, we’ll revisit our favorite stories from the last six months, and you can see all 100 at any time by going here. Today, we tackle Democracy in America.
The biggest story we covered in Today in Zeega by far—both in terms of scope and sheer length—was the US government shutdown. The shutdown began on October 1st just as one of the most controversial parts of Barack Obama’s Affordable Health Care Act, the marketplace exchange of Healthcare.gov, went live. 16 days later, the shutdown ended with billions of dollars lost and virtually nothing gained. Along the way, we saw the worst our political system had to offer on all sides, as attested to by many of the Today in Zeegas you’ll see below.
It makes sense, then, to juxtapose the bummer vibes of one of the year’s more deplorable moments with the highest ideals to which our country aspires. So, after you get your fill of wallowing in the mire of where we are now, wash it down with a dram of what we’ve been before and can still be again, as epitomized by these Today in Zeegas on Election Day, Veteran’s Day, and the 50th Anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s I Have a Dream Speech. We’re especially stoked on the archival GIFs featured in the MLK and Veterans Day pieces.
